Guide for Authors

Aims and Scope

Cellular & Molecular Immunology (CMI) is a monthly journal providing the latest information and advancements in our understanding of the immunological response of the host, both in vitro and in vivo. The journal is designed to cover both basic research and clinical applications in all areas of cellular and molecular immunology, including but not limited to:

 clinical immunology

 comparative immunology

 immunobiology

 immunogenetics

 immunological techniques

 immunopathology

 immunopharmacology

 infection immunology

 neuroimmunology

 transplantation immunology

 tumor immunology

 veterinary immunology

The journal publishes Research Articles, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Research Highlight, News & Views, Correspondence, and Letters to the Editor.

CMI welcomes submissions that explore novel ideas, or unor contra-orthodox approaches, as long as they are underpinned by conventional scientific practice and present falsifiable hypotheses that are tested with empirical methods and evidence.

Manuscripts must provide evidence that can be critically evaluated, and where applicable:

 define disorders and clinical symptoms by standard clinical terms (e.g. allergy, asthma, lupus, etc.)

 deem results ‘significant’ only using standard statistical methods in biological effects/outcomes studies

 use consistent and defined amounts and mixtures of herbal formulas, or use purified monomer extracts.

Terms that may be ambiguous to the broad audience of the journal should be clearly defined within the manuscript.

News and Views

News-and-views article-type denotes an authoritative, but readable and objective, account of cutting-edge research, usually as originally reported in a paper published in the same issue or elsewhere. It is not peer-reviewed and, depending on the preference of the journal, may always be invited/commissioned by the editor(s).

No abstract required.

Word limits are provided for guidance only. The Editors will consider submissions that exceed the recommended limit, subject to feedback received during peer review.

Journal Cover Images

Unusual or interesting ophthalmic images may be supplied for potential use on the journal’s front cover. These should be either sent to the Editorial Office at cmi@ustc.edu.cn or supplied as part of a manuscript submission as ‘Cover Art’.

Each image must be supplied with a title and ownership details (name and institution) and conform to the following formatting requirements:

 Colour mode = CMYK (not RGB)

 File format = .tif, .eps or .jpg

 Minimum resolution = 300dpi at 525px wide by 300px high

Special Issues

Special issues are comprised of a group of high quality, peerreviewed manuscripts about a single specific theme / topic. Although the individual manuscripts are stand alone, they collectively make an important point by offering a comprehensive view, or by providing a diverse perspective. The number of manuscripts in a special issue is determined on case by case basis.

Special Issues are commissioned only by invitation or upon consultation with CMI editorial staff. Please contact the CoEditor-in-Chief, Zhigang Tian (tzg@ustc.edu.cn) for preliminary inquiries about special issues. Usually, a person willing to be the Guest Editor of special issue should initiate this process. This Guest Editor will act as the point of contact between CMI and the individual authors submitting manuscripts.

 Discussion

 Acknowledgements

 Author Contributions

Cover Letter: The cover letter must state that the manuscript has not been and will not be considered for publication elsewhere and give a brief introduction to the novel findings of this work, along with three or more experts in the field as potential reviewers, but no more than three excluded referees.

Title Page: The title page should include: Full title (a brief declarative statement of the major findings of the research), Running title (no more than 60 characters including spaces), affiliation and corresponding author’s contact information (full postal address, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address).

 The title should be brief, informative, of 150 characters or less and should not make a statement or conclusion.

 The running title should consist of no more than 60 letters and spaces. It should be as brief as possible, convey the essential message of the paper and not contain any abbreviations.

 Authors should disclose the sources of any support for the work, received in the form of grants and/or equipment and drugs.

Introduction: The introduction should give a brief background knowledge related to the research and should be as concise as possible.

Materials and Methods: The section should be described clearly and referenced in sufficient detail, so that all experimental procedures can be reproduced. Authors should provide the name of the manufacturer and their location for any specifically named medical equipment and instruments.

Results: The results should present the experimental data in tables and figures with suitable descriptions.

Discussion: The discussion should focus on the interpretation and significance of the findings with concise objective comments.

Acknowledgements: The acknowledgments should be brief and include financial supports along with the numbers of grants.

Author Contributions: The contributions of each author should be listed in general terms, for example, JS designed experiments and helped write the manuscript.

Conflict of Interest: Authors must declare whether or not there are any competing financial interests in relation to the work described. This information must be included at this stage and will be published as part of the paper.

References: The Vancouver system of referencing should be used, with the exception that the journal issue number should not be included (see the examples given below). In the text, references should be cited using superscript Arabic numerals in the order in which they appear. If cited in tables or figure legends, references should be numbered according to the first identification of the table or figure in the text.
