Computer Author Information
Computer articles are subject to word-count limits, with each figure and table counted as 300 words. Article titles shouldn’t exceed nine words. The abstract should be no more than 150 words and should describe the overall focus of your manuscript. Any article that exceeds the word count may be rejected automatically without going through the review process. Please see below for specifics on peer-reviewed papers and columns.
Authors should include a References section at the end of their manuscript, with citations listed in numerical order following the sequence in which the works are cited in the text. Sidebars can contain additional references; these shouldn’t duplicate any of the citations in the References section at the end of the article. References should follow this format:
1. the author’s name, the full title of the work, the publisher, the date of publication, and, in the case of articles or chapters within a work, inclusive page numbers.
If page numbers aren’t available or the work cited hasn’t been formally published, a URL must be provided so that readers can access the work online.
Peer-Reviewed Papers
Feature articles shouldn’t exceed 6,000 words (minimum 4,500 words), including text, bibliography, and author biographies. Feature articles should contain no more than 20 references to other published works.
Manuscripts accepted for publication should be accompanied by a brief biographical sketch for each author. Biographical information should include only the following information: current title or position, up to three research interests, highest academic degree, discipline in which the degree was awarded, granting institution, membership in relevant professional societies (such as the IEEE Computer Society and the ACM), and email address.
Please read the author guidelines before submitting. When you are ready to submit, please go to https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cs-ieee.
General Papers
Computer publishes diverse types of editorial content. Our Cover Features, Computing Practices, Perspectives, and Research Features provide a strong mix of case studies, opinion pieces, and solutions to technical problems. Authors can submit manuscripts for publication as Computing Practices, Perspectives, or Research Features on any topic within Computer‘s scope at any time.
Special-Issue Papers
Computer routinely publishes special issues on leading-edge topics that have been proposed by guest editors. Open calls for papers can be found here and on Computer‘s homepage.
Columns and Departments
In addition to feature articles, Computer publishes numerous columns to which you can contribute. Columns are not peer reviewed. Columns shouldn’t exceed 2,500 words (minimum 1,500 words), including text, author biographies, and table text. Columns should have no more than 10 references.
If you are interested in contributing to a column, please contact the publications coordinator.
Open Access
This magazine is a hybrid publication, allowing either traditional manuscript submission or author-paid Open Access (OA) manuscript submission.
The OA option, if selected, enables unrestricted public access to the article via IEEE Xplore and the Computer Society Digital Library with payment of the current Article Processing Charge (APC). The OA option will be offered to the author at the time the manuscript is submitted and the APC must be paid before the article is published in the magazine. Note that authors will receive an email from CCC-Rightslink, our APC vendor, asking for payment. Please visit the IEEE Open Access FAQs for further details. Authors seeking an APC waiver should submit substantiated evidence and documentation to pubs-waivers@computer.org. Corresponding authors from low-income countries are eligible for waived or reduced open access APCs.
The traditional option, if selected, enables access to all qualified subscribers and purchasers via IEEE Xplore and the Computer Society Digital Library. No OA payment is required.
