Partnership with IFAAMAS: Thanks to our partnership with IFAAMAS, original research articles accepted at JAAMAS in the 12 month period preceding each year's AAMAS conference notification date are eligible for presentation at AAMAS. These articles have the option to publish an extended abstract (maximum two pages) in the AAMAS proceedings. The article must be original and not previously published as a full paper in an archival conference. The aim of this opportunity is to encourage authors to submit original research directly to JAAMAS. For full details, please see the current AAMAS conference site.

Types of Papers

Manuscript (Regular Paper), Editorial, Survey Paper, Tutorial, Review, Viewpoint. Brief Communication, Book Review

Survey and tutorial papers are comprehensive reviews and authoritative tutorials of research and practice in agent systems.

Editorials would only be appropriate as a very brief paper introducing the papers in a special issue or outlining a key theme of such an issue.

Book Reviews are comprehensive and authoritative reviews of books dealing with agents and multiagent systems.

The Brief Communication format is intended for presentation of important observations that can be clearly described in an abbreviated format. Brief communications should have an abstract and should not exceed four printed pages in total. They should contain firm data and will be refereed to the same standards as other papers submitted to JAAMAS. The justification for a brief communication must be sound, and the claims within it must be substantiated. These might include responses to original research papers or rebuttals to viewpoints, for example.

A Viewpoint is an article on relevant issues in autonomous agents and multiagent systems research, education, applications or similar, and its impact on society, technology and progress. Such articles are distinct from original research papers in that, rather than reporting on original research or surveying an area, they are intended to spark interest and activity in new areas or ideas, typically on matters of timely relevance.

See Manuscript Submission section for more details on the information sheets that should accompany each type of submission.

Manuscript Submission

Each submission to JAAMAS must be accompanied by a 1-2 page information sheet that clearly answers the following questions. (Note that reviewers will expect these answers to be part of the introductory material of your paper; if this isn't currently the case, we strongly suggest you to revise your current manuscript before submission.) Please put the same care and effort in preparing this information sheet as you expect the reviewers to put in their reviews. Papers with incomplete or uninformative information sheets will be returned without review.

For regular papers:

1. What is the main claim of the paper? Why is this an important contribution to the autonomous agents and multi-agent systems literature?

["We are the first to have done X" is not an acceptable answer without stating the importance of X.]

2. What is the evidence you provide to support your claim? Be precise.

["The evidence is provided by experiments and/or theoretical analysis" is not an acceptable answer without a summary of the main results and their implications.]

3. What papers by other authors make the most closely related contributions, and how is your paper related to them? Provide journal references whenever possible. Don’t rely only on a conference proceedings.

4. Have you published parts of your paper before, for instance in a conference? If so, give details of your previous paper(s) and a precise statement detailing how your paper provides a significant contribution beyond the previous paper(s).

For survey/tutorial papers:

1. What is the novelty and significance of the research area being surveyed in the context of autonomous agents and multiagent systems?

2. Explain how you have sought to ensure that your survey is not merely an arbitrary summary of different pieces of work in this area, but is in fact a rigorous and methodical analysis of the area.

3. Have survey papers on the same research area been published and, in particular, have any been published recently? If so, list them.

4. What are the main differences between your survey and these previously published papers?

5. Have you published parts of your paper before? If so, give details of the previous paper(s) and a precise statement detailing how your paper provides a significant contribution beyond the previous paper(s).

For viewpoint papers:

1. What is the novelty and significance of the area being discussed in the context of autonomous agents and multiagent systems?

2. Why is it timely to provide a viewpoint article in this way now?

3. Explain how you have sought to ensure that your viewpoint is not merely an individual perspective with little sound basis, and provides a synthesis of current thinking in addition to your own perspective so that it provides a rigorous analysis of the area.

4. Have research, survey or viewpoint papers on the same research area been published and, in particular, have any been published recently? If so, list them.

5. What are the main differences between your viewpoint and these previously published papers?

6. Have you published parts of your paper before? If so, give details of the previous paper(s) and a precise statement detailing how your paper provides a significant contribution beyond the previous paper(s).

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink “Submit online” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.
