Submission guidelines
Instructions for Authors
Authorship should incorporate and should be restricted to those who have contributed substantially to the work in one or more of the following categories:
• Conceived of or designed study
• Performed research
• Analyzed data
• Contributed new methods or models
• Wrote the paper
Types of Paper
Original papers:
Original papers present substantial original work on neuronal information processing in a very broad sense, on the mathematical description of processes underlying neuronal functioning, on the biomimetic implementation of neuronal processing strategies, and on the mathematics of statistical methods used in analyzing neuronal data. A clear mathematical formulation of a paper's contents is essential.
Letters to the Editor:
Important new results are welcomed as Letters-to-the-Editor. As a rule, results satisfying the three criteria ‘novel, important, and well-presented’ will be published within three months after submission. Letters can be up to eight pages in print with no more than six pages text (1 printed page corresponds to about 600 words) and two pages figures and references – the shorter, the better.
Reviews:
Reviews are scholarly reports summarizing rapid developments in basic research or presenting an overview of areas of sustained interest. Reviews should feature mathematical structures underlying the developments in the field they describe, or provide the relevant experimental facts to understand and model the phenomena that are highlighted, or do both. Clear exposition, scientific relevance, and general accessibility are key criteria that hold for this category of paper. Reviews have no limitations to length. They can be either invited or unsolicited.
Prospects:
Prospects are a novel form of review emphasizing future developments more than does the typical Review, and giving more license to personal speculation, provided it is clearly explained. They are short and provide an up-to-date account of the present status of an active research area, setting the perspective for future research. It is essential that they be written at a level comprehensible to beginning graduate students.
BC Forum:
BC Forum is for short provocative commentaries and new, concise theoretical/mathematical demonstrations. Also welcomed are novel theoretical demonstrations to support classical results or innovative mathematical proofs of known results. In general, BC Forum articles should not exceed two BC pages.
Articles from Junior Scientists: The following three article types can only be co-authored by Junior Scientists (defined as graduate students or postdoctoral fellow) and will be reviewed by one regular reviewer and one or more Junior Scientists.
Mini review:
3000 words, 2-3 Figures. A didactic but comprehensive overview of a topic or technique of interest to the Biological Cybernetics community. Authors are encouraged to also give their own perspective on the matter where appropriate in a separate clearly marked subsection. Authors are encouraged to contact the co-editor in chief to discuss appropriateness/fit of the manuscript.
Journal Club:
1200 words, 1 Figure. A short and focused account of a recent (less than one year old) publication in Biological Cybernetics or elsewhere. The authors should not belong to the same institution as any of the co-authors on the chosen publication. The manuscript should go beyond a simple summary of the original publication and point to aspects of the work of specific relevance to the Biological Cybernetics readership.
