Journals Submission Instructions

Author Instructions

Important Notes:

Do not begin a new or revised manuscript submission unless you are prepared to complete the process. Any approvals required prior to submission should be acquired before starting the submission process.

There are two submission sites; one for JES and one for JSS. They share a user database so that if you have an account in one you have an account in the other. You can easily toggle back and forth between the two journal sites once logged in.

Submissions to both regular and focus issues are made through the same sites. You will be able to specify focus issue submission during the submission process.

Journal Policies

Information about All ECS Journal Articles

All manuscripts submitted are considered for publication with the understanding that they have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

All manuscripts undergo the Society’s rigorous peer-review process.

All manuscripts must fall within at least one of the Topical Interest Areas (TIAs) for the Society’s journals.

Communication, Perspective, Review, and CRES3T articles will be published within their relevant TIA and be clearly identified as to the article type.

Content presented at ECS meetings and manuscripts published in ECS Transactions may be submitted to the journals after suitable modification to meet the requirements of the specific article type and to ensure appropriate quality for archival publication. Although there is no strict deadline for the submission of these papers, six months from the date of the symposium is considered sufficient time to revise a paper to meet the stricter standards of ECS journals.

Content submitted to a preprint service — such as ECSarXiv — may be submitted to the ECS journals, provided they have not been published or posted elsewhere, and after suitable modification to meet the requirements of the specific article type and to ensure appropriate quality for archival publication

Authors choose whether to publish their articles as open access or not, except if the article is designated Editors’ Choice or if the article is published in a focus issue; these articles are automatically made open access at no cost to the authors.

Paper Preparation

General Text Requirements

Improperly formatted manuscript files will be returned to the author for correction before the paper is sent out for review.

Do not include your cover letter within your article file. Cover letters can be uploaded as separate documents or entered into the appropriate field during the submission process.

All manuscripts must be prepared in Single-column format.

DO NOT embed figures or tables within the body of the text. References, tables, figures, and figure captions should be placed after the body of the paper.

DO NOT embed figures within LaTex files, as they will often not convert to PDF properly. In addition, please note that the conversion engines currently do not support .sty or .bib files and that Plain Tex and DVI formats are also not supported.

Equations must not be entered as image files. Please use a MathType feature, the equations tool, or plain text.

The Source File for the Article File MUST be saved in either Word or LaTex/RevTex format.

For new manuscript submissions ONLY: Please submit a single PDF file of your manuscript for use during the initial peer-review process. Source files for the manuscript and any figures can be submitted prior to formal acceptance for publication.

Figure Requirements

Submission of separate figure files is not required for the initial peer-review process. When submitting individual figure files during the revision stage or prior to formal acceptance, please be sure to follow these guidelines:

Submit one file per COMPLETE figure. A multi-part/composite figure MUST be submitted as a complete/combined single file with each part labeled appropriately. Submission of individual sections of a composite figure is NOT accepted.

EPS or TIFF formats preferred.

Sized at one-column width (3.25 inches) wherever possible.

300 dpi resolution. (Higher resolution files will not improve figure quality but will take longer to load.)

Bode and Nyquist plots of the same data should not be presented as this is a waste of journal space. Pick and use only one format. (For a complete description of the ECS Journals’ Style for EIS Plots, please click HERE.)

DO NOT submit Tables as figure files. All Tables must be included in the Article File as text. DO NOT use color within Tables.

It is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain permission to reproduce all previously published results/data/figures from the copyright holder. The author(s) should be prepared to show proof of permission upon request. Such permission should be noted in the Figure caption or as a footnote and attested to during the submission process when prompted.

Authors may submit ONLY ONE set of figure files. Do not submit multiple versions of a given figure. Any such submissions will be returned to the author for correction prior to peer-review.

Research Articles

A Research article is a primary source; it reports the methods and results of an original study performed by the authors where data have been collected and analyzed by the authors, and conclusions drawn from the results of that analysis. A standard format is used for these articles, in which the author presents the research in an orderly, logical manner.

Communication Articles

Communications are brief articles or reports that describe impactful research wherein dissemination prior to a full complete study/paper will substantially benefit the electrochemical or solid state community. The authors should concisely describe the high impact of the research and why early dissemination is desirable for the field when submitting the manuscript. To ensure that your Communication paper can be published upon acceptance, limit the manuscript length to no more than 2500 words (excluding references) and 1-4 single-column-width figure parts. Papers which exceed these limits will be returned to the author for editing prior to the initiation of peer review. Additional formatting and presentation requirements apply.
