Guide for Authors
Aims and scope
Hormones and Behavior publishes original research articles, reviews, commentaries, perspectives and special issues concerning hormone-brain-behavior relationships, broadly defined. The journal welcomes studies conducted on species ranging from invertebrates to mammals, including studies of humans. Also included is work addressing neuroendocrine-behavior relationships, neuroendocrine and endocrine mechanisms controlling the development or adult expression of behavior as well as studies of the environmental control and evolutionary significance of hormone-brain-behavior relationships. Studies with an emphasis on molecular, neuroanatomical, or non-neural systems are also welcome when relevant to endocrine signaling and behavior.

Types of papers
Hormones and Behavior publishes original research articles, review articles and special issues concerning hormone-brain-behavior relationships, broadly defined. The journal's scope ranges from laboratory and field studies concerning neuroendocrine as well as endocrine mechanisms controlling the development or adult expression of behavior to studies concerning the environmental control and evolutionary significance of hormone-behavior relationships. The journal welcomes studies conducted on species ranging from invertebrates to mammals, including humans.
Research Paper — Full-length original research papers that report significant, new and confirmed findings. These are the primary publications in Hormones and Behavior.
Short Communications — Describe a significant finding whose magnitude is insufficient to support an Original Research Article. Short Communications are limited to 2000 words, a 250 word abstract, two tables or two figures and 20 references. Other requirements are as for Original Research Articles.
Discussions / Commentaries — the Journal publishes discussions or commentaries up to a maximum of 1,500 words on published articles. The goal of the commentary format is to advance the field by providing a forum for varying perspectives on a topic.
Correspondence — Letter to the Editor, Short comments, 500 words or less, on issues related to publications in the journal.
Review article — extensive reviews on a specific topic or shorter reviews that draw attention to specific developments in a field of hormones and behavior.
Special Issues — The journal welcomes proposals for special issues on topics that fall within the scope of the journal. Those wishing to guest edit a special issue should prepare a proposal that:
Sets out the importance of the area and explains the anticipated contribution of the special issue in advancing understanding in this area
Describes the scope and range of contributions to establish that there is sufficient breadth of research for a successful Special Issue
Identifies papers and authors for possible inclusion in the special issue and an indication of the time-scale in which the special issue could be produced.
Guest editors of Special Issues will be invited to submit a review in advance of the publication of their Special Issue.

• A competing interests statement is provided, even if the authors have no competing interests to declare
• Journal policies detailed in this guide have been reviewed
• Referee suggestions and contact details provided, based on journal requirements
